EDIT:

For its fifth edition, EDIT: is dedicated to the theme of "ennui". In French, this single word stands for many meanings – together lassitude, melancholia, grief, annoyance… These numerous meanings can be translated in English by "trouble" or "boredom". This multitude of significations opens up a whole horizon of thoughts on this paradoxical theme that can only be developed, both artistically and conceptually, by avoiding it to uprise.

by Daria Joubert

This issue opens in the Essays column with a question by Jerry Oë: can one get bored in front of a work of art? Several texts will try to answer this question, including Nicolas Marailhac’s one about repetition in photography or Tiffany Kleinbeck’s study about disconnection in films by Kaurismäki, Kiarostami and Antonioni.

The Portfolio part presents the works of artists Marcelline Delbecq, Emilie Pitoiset and Ulla von Brandenburg, echoing the exhibition NO MORE BORING ART organized in parallel at the Point Ephémère in Paris. Emilie Pitoiset produces works linked by the idea of shift, even danger. Marcelline Delbecq’s work calls together mental images between description and fiction. As an adept of "trompe l'œil", illusions and mysteries, Ulla von Brandenburg develops herself a choreographic imagery.

EDIT: stands up for emerging artists. You will discover in In:Edit a new photographic series by Arja Katariina Hyytiäinen and a selection of installations by Stéphane Vigny. In Contributions, Stéfane Rakita made a video especially for this issue.

We are also interested in the current events of contemporary art. Therefore, we suggest some reviews about recent exhibitions, from Christoph Büchel to Robert Rauschenberg through Tabaimo. Boredom, often considered as negative, sometimes inauspicious, can also be considered as a positive virtue. This is the case for the GrumoR Company, which created a whole show on the subject that interested Beatrice Rossetto.

John Cage said: “If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all.” Please do not hesitate to come back and read us many times! We wish you enjoy your reading on our website and are thrilled to announce that EDIT: #6 will be dedicated to the theme of recycling.
